Infection Prevention and Control at Fostering Smiles

Keeping you safe and healthy!

Dental Hygienists are held to some of the highest infection prevention and control standards in the health care profession, each regulated by their provincial regulatory body. Fostering Smiles provincial regulatory body is the BCCOHP.

What does Fostering Smiles do to prepare for your appointment?

  • Use disinfectant wipes to clean all chairs, countertops, trays, lights, handles, and ultrasonic units

  • Set up sterilized instruments and items needed for your specific appointment

  • Ensure countertops are clutter free

  • Purge waterlines to keep them bacteria free

What can you expect during your appointment?

  • I will wash/sanitize my hands

  • I will don PPE including a new mask, dental scopes, and new gloves; depending on your appointment I may also don a gown, head covering & face shield

  • You may be asked to use a pre-procedural mouth rinse to reduce bacteria in your mouth

  • You will be asked to wear clean safety glasses for the duration for your appointment to prevent eye injury (these will be provided for you; however, if you feel more comfortable, feel free to bring your own)

  • I may change my gloves, mask and use sanitizer/wash my hands throughout the appointment to avoid cross-contamination

What else should you know?

  • Cassettes, pouches and instruments are sterilized after every appointment

  • Fostering Smiles keeps records of all sterilization cycles for instruments to ensure sterilizers are working properly

  • You have the right to ask your dental office on their infection control procedures

At Fostering Smiles, it is my priority to maintain a safe and healthy environment to protect you and your family at all times. All recommendations and questions are always welcomed.
